Minor earthquake rattles tourist town in north Queensland

An earthquake with a magnitude of 3.9 has struck near Airlie Beach, in north Queensland, overnight.

The minor quake struck off the coast near Airlie Beach shortly after 11pm last night, Geosciences Australia reported.

Vibrations were felt nearly 150km away, with reports from residents in Mackay and Ayr.

However, the majority of calls to Geosciences Australia came from people in Airlie Beach and Bowen.

There had been no reports of damage, Duty seismologist Dan Connolly said.

The quake comes less than two months after one measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale was recorded off the coast of Bowen.

"There have been more than 60 this year within 100kms of that area," Mr Connolly said.

"I wouldn't be surprised if there were more to come, although I wouldn't be confident of another huge one," he added.
