A 29-year-old man has died after friends found him unconscious at the bottom of a hotel pool on the Gold Coast.

The incident happened about 8pm at the Top of the Mark hotel in Surfers Paradise but it was unrelated to Schoolies celebrations in the area.

The victim is believed to be a resident at the Orchid Ave apartment complex, News Corp reports.

Police said the friends left him in the pool, went back to the apartment and returned a short time later to find him unconscious.

They dragged him from the pool unconscious and not breathing before calling triple-0.

Paramedics arrived on the scene and performed CPR on the victim before loading him into the back of an ambulance and taking him to the Gold Coast University Hospital in a critical condition.

He was later pronounced dead.

Police said at this stage there were no suspicious circumstances.

Inspector John Hallam said: "Police will interview persons who were with him at the time and try to ascertain how he came to be on the bottom of the pool."
