A man has been charged with drink driving after he allegedly mowed down a pedestrian in far north Queensland.

Police say the 57-year-old, who allegedly had a blood-alcohol level of 0.083 per cent, hit a 23-year-old pedestrian on Draper Street, Cairns, just before 7pm on Friday, inflicting severe head injuries.

The driver was charged with two drink-driving offences and will appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on August 12.
