Don't drive tired these holidays: RACQ

Too many Queenslanders are dying on the roads because of drowsy drivers, the state's peak motoring body says.

RACQ says fatigue contributed to 31 crash fatalities on Queensland's roads last year.

But unlike speeding and drink driving, most drivers don't appreciate the risk of getting behind the wheel without enough shut-eye.

"One of the scariest things about driver fatigue is that people might not know how tired they are until they make a mistake," RACQ executive manager technical and safety policy Steve Spalding said.

"Your ability to drive safely is already affected before your head starts to nod."

He urged motorists making long or family trips on the September break to prepare properly by getting a good night's rest.
