Qld violence court extended for 18 months

Extending a trial of Queensland's first domestic and family violence court will allow the government to properly assess how to roll out similar courts state-wide, the government says.

Attorney-General Yvette D'Ath also says there's been a substantial increase in applications to the court since it began hearing cases at Southport courthouse on September 1.

"This increase in applications suggests that people who have experienced domestic and family violence feel more confident in coming forward, which is a great outcome," Mrs D'Ath said in a statement.

The attorney-general said the trial would be extended for another 18 months, until June 20, 2017.

She said once the court had been operating for one year, this September, the government would assess its outcomes and impacts.

The government would then be able to work out the best way, and where, to roll out similar courts across the state.

Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence Minister Shannon Fentiman said the government was committed to holding perpetrators of domestic and family violence to account.
