Police are door-knocking streets around the Noosa River following the brutal stabbing death of a 21-year-old man.

The man was found with multiple stab wounds to his chest where he was lying in Ernest Street in Tewantin at 1am on Sunday and died as he was taken by paramedics to hospital.

Police have declared a crime scene and cordoned off surrounding streets, which are on the banks of the river.

Sunshine Coast Detective Inspector Dave Drinnen said a large team, including homicide detectives and forensic officers, were attempting to piece together the events that led to his death.

"We have forensic officers who are processing the scene and we are under way with a door knock of the surrounding area to establish the movements of the deceased," he said.
