Day of respect for Australian bus drivers

The two unions representing bus drivers have organised a national day of action to remember slain Brisbane driver Manmeet Alisher, and highlight violence against public transport workers.

The 'Day of Respect' has been organised by the Rail, Tram and Bus Union (TWU) and the Transport Workers' Union (TWU) in response to last month's death of India-born Mr Alisher.

Mr Alisher, also known as Manmeet Sharma, died when an incendiary device was thrown at him last month while he stopped to pick up passengers in Moorooka.

Local man Anthony O'Donohue, 48, has been charged with his murder.

O'Donohue had previously received mental health services on Brisbane's southside

In addition to organised events, the unions are urging everyone using public transport to take the simple step of saying "thank you" to drivers, if they don't already.
