A thunderstorm is bringing damaging winds and large hail to Brisbane and surrounding areas.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Dean Narramore says the system, currently in the Darling Downs region, is moving east and expected to hit the Queensland capital between 4pm and 5pm (AEST) on Thursday.

Sunshine Coast and the Gold Coast will also be impacted, he said.

"You'll probably see some damaging winds and large hail and some brief very heavy rainfall with the storms as well," Mr Narramore told AAP.

"But they're very fast moving, so they won't last long in any location."

Mr Narramore said the storms were likely to feature wind gusts of more than 90km/h.
