Cyclist charged with bus driver assault

A cyclist has been charged after allegedly following a bus driver to a Brisbane depot and punching him several times in the face before fleeing the scene.

The 49-year-old driver suffered cuts to his eye and lip in the assault, which allegedly happened after he overtook the male rider while driving around Toowong on Tuesday night.

The 46-year-old Kenmore man turned himself in to police early on Thursday and was charged with assault occasioning bodily harm.

He will appear in Brisbane Magistrates Court on September 14.

The incident comes amid a bitter industrial dispute between bus drivers and the Brisbane City Council over pay and safety issues.

Rail, Tram and Bus union secretary Tom Brown said the incident demonstrates the union's concerns.

"Our drivers have had enough. Enough is enough," Mr Brown told the Nine Network.

The assault follows the death of driver Manmeet Alisher in October after he was set alight by a passenger.

The RTBU is calling for Brisbane City Council to look at installing protective barriers around drivers and hiring security guards on certain trouble-prone routes.

Mr Brown said the safety measures should be included in the enterprise bargaining agreement staff are currently negotiating with council.

"Anything else they can back out of later," he told ABC Radio.

"The concessions they have made are not nearly enough."

Drivers will continue with already-planned industrial action on Thursday, with stoppages planned from 10am to 2pm and 6pm to 10pm.
