Couple granted parole for drug trafficking

A husband and wife have walked from court on parole after pleading guilty to couriering cocaine from a Queensland takeaway shop.

Leonard Shaun Kelly, 50, and Kelly Gwen Coster, 41, pleaded guilty in the Brisbane Supreme Court on Friday to trafficking dangerous drugs.

The court heard Kelly and Coster took on jobs as couriers after running up a small drug debt with the principal offender, who ran the operation out of Aspley restaurant Saucy Wok.

During a six-week period in late 2014 the pair couriered 100 transactions of cocaine, worth an estimated $66,600.

The court heard Kelly and Coster received a 10 per cent commission on every sale of every gram of cocaine, about $6660 in total.

Justice Helen Bowskill said Kelly acted more in the role of the courier, with Coster only driving Kelly and answering the phone on some occasions.

The court heard Coster was "genuinely and absolutely remorseful" for her conduct and the six days she spent in the watch house after being arrested had a profound effect on her turning her life around.

Kelly and Coster were both sentenced to three years in jail with immediate parole, with Justice Bowskill noting Kelly had already spent eight months in custody.
