Queensland's COVID-19 cases enter triple digits for the first time

Queensland's daily COVID-19 tally has entered triple figures for the first time during the pandemic.

The state recorded 186 new cases, up from 79 yesterday.

In response to the rising case numbers the state's mask mandate will be extended from 5am (AEDT) tomorrow, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced.

Ms Palaszczuk said they would be required in cinemas and theatres for both workers and patrons. Hospitality staff will also be required to wear them.

Masks are currently mandatory in supermarkets, shops, on public transport and in ride-shares.

The Queensland premier also responded to concerns about PCR tests for people entering the state.

Ms Palaszczuk has said rapid antigen testing may be used for border crossings – but not until next year.

"We are happy to get further advice from AHPPC about rapid antigen testing," she said.

For the remainder of the year, however, PCR testing will still be needed to cross the border.

She also disputed the premise that it was travellers heading to Queensland that were overwhelming testing centres in NSW.

"Ten per cent of their tests are people coming into Queensland," she said.

Queensland Chief Health Officer Dr John Gerrard said Omicron had become the dominant variant of COVID-19 in the state.

But he said the increase in cases wasn't due to a "super spreader event".

Instead, he attributed the rapid rise to the contagiousness of Omicron, and the increase in COVID-19 testing.

He said it was "not surprising".

Queensland is also expected to pass the 90 per cent first-dose vaccine mark today.

Ms Palaszczuk said 90 per cent double dose would be reached sometime in January, but a specific date was not yet predicted.
