Cop cleared over fake charge allegations

Allegations that a Gold Coast detective laid a fake charge on a woman have been dismissed in court.

Jason John Ricardo was charged this year with abuse of office after allegedly laying unwarranted criminal charges against the girlfriend of a suspect.

Mr Ricardo had been due to face a committal hearing at the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

However, crown prosecutor Danny Boyle told the court the prosecution would offer no evidence in respect of the case.

Magistrate Ray Rinaudo dismissed the charge.

The allegations against Mr Ricardo emerged when Gold Coast resident Kylie Cunnington complained to Queensland's crime and corruption watchdog.

Ms Cunnington was the girlfriend of Rick El-Masri, who was charged over the sniper-style shooting of a pedestrian on the Gold Coast but was later acquitted.

Outside court Mr Ricardo's lawyer Calvin Gnech said his client was "very happy" with the outcome.

Mr Ricardo was stood down from his police job after the allegations emerged.

Queensland Police Union president Ian Leavers said Detective Sergeant Ricardo was enormously relieved and was looking forward to returning to full police duties.

Mr Leavers said now court proceedings were over police would conduct an internal investigation, which was standard practice.

The union is negotiating for the detective to return to his old job.

"I was always confident right from the start that Detective Sergeant Ricardo would be vindicated," Mr Leavers told reporters.

"We will continue to support him because we have full confidence that he was simply doing his job."
