Commonwealth Games baton revealed

A futuristic centrepiece for the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games Queen's Baton Relay has been revealed to mark 500 days until the event.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and Commonwealth Games Minister Stirling Hinchliffe were among those to attend the baton's reveal at Jupiters casino in Broadbeach on Sunday.

The baton was designed by Brisbane-based company Designworks, which edged out interstate competitors for the job.

It features a futuristic, elongated loop shape with an outer side that is part white plastic, part macadamia wood.

The inner lining will change colour as it is passed from one person to the next.

The design is said to embody "the boundless energy of the people, place and spirit of the Gold Coast".

Part of the baton is made from repurposed plastic collected from the Gold Coast's coastline and waterways, with designers hoping residents will be prompted to consider pollution and overconsumption.

A stainless steel section is laser-engraved featuring the nations where the baton will travel.

The Queen's message will be printed on a special paper made from a grass-like plant, held safely on the side of the baton and visible through a clear window.

Ms Palaszczuk said the baton had created exposure for the Brisbane-based designers.

"It highlights the strength of our state's creative industries that a local company were chosen to be the design and manufacturing team behind the Queen's Baton," she said.

The Commonwealth Games website said the baton represented a connection to the ocean and the land through contrasting materials and finishes.

"The warm, natural, earthy macadamia wood contrasts the bright, structured reclaimed plastic leading edge," organisers said.

"Separated by a stainless steel stringer, you can see the linear reflection of the coastline and hinterland in the baton's form."

The baton will begin its journey from London's Buckingham Palace in March 2017.

The games will attract more than 100,000 visitors to the Gold Coast and boost the economy by an estimated $2 billion.
