Comm Games velodrome named after Meares

Cycling great Anna Meares will have a Gold Coast Commonwealth Games velodrome named in her honour.

The $59 million word-class velodrome at Chandler will host the track cycling competition at the 2018 games.

It's a fitting tribute to the Queensland-born golden girl, who is yet to announce whether she will compete at the event.

"She is a champion Olympian ... and medallist but importantly a champion person," Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said on Sunday.

"I think it's a great tribute to her, her dedication and commitment to representing Australia."

The country girl and coal miner's daughter is the most decorated woman in Olympic cycling having won two gold, a silver and three bronze medals.

It's unclear whether Meares will retire or aim to end her career at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games or try to push through to the Tokyo Olympics, when she would be 36.
