Christian lobby group fights abortion bill

A conservative lobby group has called on the Queensland parliament to oppose the decriminalisation of abortion, claiming a bill introduced by Cairns MP Rob Pyne was a "betrayal of women".

The Australian Christian Lobby petition, titled `say not to the most dangerous abortion laws in the world' was tabled in parliament on Tuesday.

Almost 24,000 people signed the e-petition in less than two weeks.

The ACL claimed in a statement it was the largest in Queensland parliament e-petition history, though more than four times as many people opposed a 20 per cent increase to vehicle registration in 2009.

And 75,000 people called for a daylight savings trial in 2007.

The ACL Queensland branch has delivered copies of the e-petition to Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and Opposition Leader Tim Nicholls.

Director Wendy Francis handed a copy to women and youth minister Shannon Fentiman on Wednesday.

Ms Francis said the "overwhelming opposition" to Mr Pyne's bill sent a strong message the community did not want existing abortion laws to be changed.

"This bill is a betrayal of women," she said.

"The Queensland parliament will be failing Queensland women if the only option they can offer for an supported pregnancy is abortion."

Mr Pyne introduced his private member's bill to decriminalise abortion to the parliament on May 10.

It is now being considered by the health committee for consideration.
