China Stone coal mine "unviable"

A proposed coal mine that would produce 128 million tonnes of carbon dioxide annually is economically and ecologically unviable and should not be approved, environmental group Lock The Gate says.

Submissions for the China Stone coal mine, which would extract and export 38 million tonnes of thermal coal a year from northern end of the Galilee Basin in Central Queensland, close on Monday.

Lock the Gate has urged the Queensland government to reject the plan, and says proponent MacMines Austasia should be forced to undertake additional water and biodiversity assessments on the sites before any decision is made.
