Child sex offender freed from Qld jail

A man who sexually assaulted children, masturbated outside a school and declared that women "set you up for rape" has been deemed fit to be released back into the community.

Geoffrey Doolan, 49, has been in jail since 2010 for assaulting two brothers in a public toilet in far north Queensland.

He was given a three-year jail term for those offences and has a history of sexually offending against children and women dating back to 1990.

At the end of his sentence in May 2013, he was deemed unfit for release and ordered to undergo rehabilitative programs to address his offending.

During a review of his case earlier this month, two psychiatrists noted he had developed some insight into his behaviour and its consequences despite him saying he didn't trust women because they "set you up for rape".

Both considered he was still a "significant risk" to the community, especially in light of his history of alcohol abuse.

However, they considered this risk could be mitigated through a strict supervision order that banned him from drinking for five years.

Any breach of this condition, both psychiatrists agreed, should warrant a return to custody.

Brisbane Supreme Court Justice Ann Lyons ordered Doolan to be released on Monday under the five-year order, which contains 35 conditions.

These include that he must abstain from drugs and alcohol, abide by a curfew and not have contact with children.
