Police are searching for the driver of a small water truck after a toddler was yesterday found on an Ipswich road with critical head injuries.

The 12-month-old boy somehow made his way alone onto Fernvale Road at Brassall where it's believed he was hit by the truck at about 3pm.

Paramedics took the child to Queensland Children’s Hospital.

The hospital has since confirmed the boy is in a stable condition with his parents now by his side.

Police are investigating how the child came to be alone when he was hit. CCTV captured at the scene did not give them a clear picture of events.

They are searching for the driver of the vehicle, described as a small water tanker truck, who may not be aware they were involved in a collision and are urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or who may have seen the vehicle in the Ipswich area, to come forward to police.
