A man has barricaded himself inside a home in central Queensland for more than 15 hours as police continue to negotiate a safe surrender.

Inspector Darren Somerville said police believe the man, in his 40s, was armed with a knife and fuel in the Gladstone house.

"He's been relaxed and talking with police, he just continues to threaten to harm himself," Insp Somerville said.

He said there was nothing to suggest drugs were involved and wouldn't speculate on the man's mental health.

The ordeal began about 11pm on Tuesday when police responded to a disturbance in the Gladstone suburb of New Auckland.

Police say the man is alone but have locked down Oregon Court and surrounding streets, while fire crews and paramedics are also on the scene.
