Queensland's corruption watchdog will investigate allegations of dodgy political donations made during this year's Gold Coast City Council elections.

The Crime and Corruption Commission probe comes two months after the Electoral Commission of Queensland launched its own investigation into donations to some candidates.

In May it was reported sacked Turnbull government minister Stuart Robert bankrolled the campaigns of three independent candidates.

The Australian reported Mr Robert secretly funnelled at least $70,000 taken from his Liberal National Party fundraising arm, the Fadden Forum, into the March elections.

The newspaper said Mr Robert might have breached party rules by directing the money without the approval of his branch.

Mr Robert, the member for the Gold Coast-based seat of Fadden, is already under investigation by the Australian Federal Police over a 2014 trip to China with a friend and LNP donor.

The CCC on Monday called for members of the public as well as former and current councillors with information about the allegations to come forward.
