Cairns police assaulted while ending fight

Two men and two women have been charged with assaulting and obstructing police after allegedly turning on officers attempting to break up an early-morning fight in the Cairns CBD.

Police say members of a brawling group turned on them after a 31-year-old man bit an officer on the finger as he was being handcuffed around 1.45am on Tuesday.

The 49-year-old acting sergeant is undergoing disease testing.

It is alleged police were forced to use capsicum spray after a number of the group assaulted officers.

The 31-year-old Mossman man was due to appear in Cairns Magistrates Court later on Tuesday charged with one count each of serious assaulting police by biting, obstructing police and public nuisance.

A 22-year-old woman, 48-year-old woman and 19-year-old man were all charged with counts of obstructing police and public nuisance and will appear in Cairns Magistrates Court on February 11.
