Cairns homes sprayed after suspected Zika case

Homes in a Cairns suburb are being sprayed for mosquitoes as health authorities await test results to confirm whether a resident has been infected with the Zika virus.

Mosquito-control teams are out in force in Parramatta Park, after the resident became ill following a trip to the Caribbean.

Tropical Public Health Service director Dr Richard Gair said the risk of transmission was low as the possibly infected person presented to their doctor early, enabling most mosquitoes to be killed before they could contract the virus.

If the resident returns a positive test it would be the 14th case of Zika virus in Queensland.

Earlier this week a Bowen resident was diagnosed with Zika after returning from Tonga.
