Qld bushfire threat downgraded

Firefighters battling a large bushfire in Queensland's Darling Downs appear to have gained the upper hand in containing the blaze.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services had warned the fast-moving blaze, north of Toowoomba, was expected affect properties at Ballard late on Tuesday afternoon.

But updated advice suggests there is no current threat to homes despite a large smoke haze in the area.

The fire is still burning near Murphys Creek Road, James Byrne Road, Bradys Road, Recreational Reserve Road and Ballard.

Seventeen fire crews and waterbombing aircraft are still trying to contain it and will continue working into the evening.

Residents in the area are advised to take action such as putting on protective clothing, wetting down fine fuels close to buildings and bringing pets inside.

QFES advises anyone who believes their property is under threat to call triple-zero.
