Fast moving thunderstorms have wiped out power at nearly 6000 homes in southeast Queensland.

A man was also taken to hospital with chest injuries after a tree branch reportedly fell on him at Umbiram during the wild weather.

The storms have been packing strong winds, with gusts of 90km/h or more recorded at Peel Island, Dalby and Welllcamp Airport.

The power outages have been widespread, with homes impacted in Brisbane, Ipswich, Moreton Bay, Somerset, Toowoomba and Lockyer Valley council areas.

The weather bureau says the thunderstorms are moving east and are forecast to affect waters off North Stradbroke Island by 6.45pm on Monday.
