Brisbane petrol most expensive of capitals

Brisbane drivers are paying nine cents a litre more for petrol than those in Sydney, according to a report.

RACQ's Monthly Fuel Price Report for March, released on Friday, shows residents in the Queensland capital paid an average of 130 cents per litre for unleaded petrol in March.

That was 1.9 cents higher than in February, although it was in part due to the high positioning of the price cycle.

Spokeswoman for the motoring body Renee Smith said Brisbane service stations charged more than interstate capitals and 8.9 cents more per litre than those in Sydney.

"Brisbane's often the dearest of the big capital cities and there's no good reason for it," she said in a statement.

"With more than 300 retailers, Brisbane should be more competitive and therefore cheaper than regional Queensland.

"However, fierce competition between servos in places like Maryborough, Miles and The Whitsundays means they sell petrol for less than we pay here in Brisbane. It's ridiculous."

Ms Smith said the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission had indicated it would address the city's pricey petrol woes when it delivered its report into Cairns prices in the coming months.

Brisbane drivers are this month paying an average of 125.8 cents per litre for unleaded petrol.

Ms Smith said the market had moved into the discounting phase.
