Brisbane cop admits stealing groceries

A police officer has escaped punishment after admitting she stole $80 worth of groceries from a Brisbane supermarket.

Senior Constable Kylie-Anne Larfield, 37, was stood down from the police force after stealing seven items, including salmon and chocolate, using a self-service check-out counter at a Mitchelton store on December 3.

She pleaded guilty to one charge of unlawfully taking away goods when she appeared in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

Magistrate Anne Thacker said there would be no penalty or conviction recorded for a number of reasons, including that Larfield had no previous convictions and had immediately co-operated with police.

Her actions were "extremely out of character", she said.

The magistrate also noted that self-service check-out counters at supermarkets were difficult to use and she had trouble using them herself.

The court heard the woman had been employed as a police officer for more than a decade and had been working as a swift-water rescuer when she went on leave due to a work-related medical condition in July last year.

Larfield's lawyer, Calvin Gnech, told media outside court that his client was remorseful.

"She's just happy that it's over and looking forward to returning to work," he said, adding that she would also face a Queensland Police disciplinary review.
