A toddler has been killed when a car reversing out of an Ipswich driveway ran over him.

The 15-month-old boy died of head injuries following the accident at his grandmother's house at Clarke St, Ripley on Monday afternoon.

The Queensland Ambulance Service say a person, believed to be a government agency worker, is being treated in Ipswich Hospital for shock.

Ipswich police are investigating the incident.

"The car did pull into the driveway and then it's reversed out of the driveway and at this stage it appears the car has reversed over the young child, causing the fatality," said Inspector David Preston.

Paramedics attempted to revive the child after rushing to scene after 1.30pm.

The Nine Network has reported the car is owned by a government department and the female driver attended the address on official business.
