Remains likely to be Qld murder victim

Bones found in a disused plumbing pit at a north Brisbane property are likely to be those of a murder victim from up to 30 years ago.

Police have begun a homicide investigation following the discovery at the Brighton property on Tuesday, and are confident of positively identifying the victim after recovering 99 per cent of the bones.

Acting Superintendent Mick O'Dowd says police believe the victim is male and are scouring missing person files in the area as far back as the mid-1980s.

The remains will be analysed at the John Tonge Centre in Brisbane, but Supt O'Dowd said it could be months before the victim is identified.

Supt O'Dowd couldn't confirm how many missing persons files were being looked at, but said it was less than 10.

The property has been owned by Autism Queensland for around 30 years, but was a private residence prior to that.

Police believe the body was dumped by someone who knew the area and knew the pit was there.

Supt O'Dowd is urging anyone who may have information to contact police or Crime Stoppers.

Police haven't identified any persons of interest as yet, but have received some information from the public since the grisly discovery.
