A body found floating in a Queensland river by three fisherman is that of a dark-haired teenage girl.

The decomposed remains, which police believe have been in the water for at least a week, were discovered by the trio about 5.30pm on Thursday in the northern Gold Coast's Pimpama River.

Police had to wait until a medical examination before they could even determine a gender.

While her cause of death is yet to be determined, Detective Inspector Dave Hutchinson confirmed it was a girl aged between 12 and 18.

"The deceased has dark hair, I can't give a length of the hair, but it's dark," Det Insp Hutchinson said.

"I also can't give any indication, at this stage, of the person's build."

Det Supt Hutchinson refused to speculate on whether the girl had any clothes on but did reveal she had been wearing jewellery.

Kerkin Road North in Pimpama has been closed as police scour the area for clues, with a crime scene declared.

Det Supt Hutchinson says police will treat the death as suspicious until evidence suggests otherwise.

The body was discovered near the riverbank close to a bridge on the rural road.

The area is popular with fishers, swimmers and kayakers and police say anyone who has been in the vicinity over the past week must contact them.

"Even if they saw nothing, that's really important to us that they come forward to tell us they saw nothing," he said.

"If somebody can say that they were there at a certain time but the body wasn't there that helps us to determine a timeline."

Det Supt Hutchinson said several missing persons matched the body's description and police were working through those cases to determine if there's any link.

Investigations are continuing, with the road likely to be closed until at least Saturday afternoon.
