Aurukun mayor supports new school head

Aurukun's mayor has endorsed the return of Queensland government control at the Cape York community's troubled school previously led by indigenous leader Noel Pearson.

Brisbane-based state school principal Mike Ennis has been appointed to lead education in the Aboriginal community from next year.

It comes after Mr Pearson withdrew his support for the school, writing a letter to the state government advising his non-profit association Good to Great Schools Australia would cease operations in Aurukun from 2017.

Aurukun Mayor Dereck Walpo welcomed Education Queensland taking over running the school, saying the remote community's children deserve a school with an Australian curriculum.

"I think there's going to be a lot of changes in our community," Cr Walpo told AAP.

"I'd like to see the P&C Association get re-established in the school - that will give better engagement with community people getting involved with the school."

Aurukun's Cape York Aboriginal Australian Academy was shut down and teachers evacuated in late May after increasing unrest.

Then-principal Scott Fatnowna was carjacked twice in as many weeks.

Teachers returned to the town in July under increased security, including personal distress alarms for staff.
