The man police believe drove the car that fatally struck Ashleigh Humphrys died suddenly yesterday.

The man, himself the father of an adult daughter, was driving to work along the Western Freeway, heading towards Brisbane's CBD, just before 4am on Sunday when his sedan hit Ms Humphrys, the Courier-Mail reports.

He went to work as normal and later told police, after they tracked him down and seized his car for forensic testing, that he did not know he had struck the young woman.

Ms Humphrys is believed to have been heavily intoxicated after celebrating her 20th birthday the night she was killed and may have been lying or kneeling on the road when the car hit her.

Police said the driver, who had no criminal record, was unlikely to have faced charges.
