Appeal lodged against 'divorce tax' ruling

An appeal has been lodged against a court ruling that forced would-be divorcees to keep paying higher costs to make their split official.

Several court costs were increased from July, including the cost of filing a divorce, which jumped from $845 to $1200, by a regulation introduced by Attorney-General George Brandis after the Senate disallowed a similar change in June.

Two Labor politicians spearheaded a legal challenge against the fees, which was dismissed by Federal Court Justice John Dowsett earlier this month.
