There was "bad blood" between a man who was shot dead and his alleged killer, police on Queensland's Darling Downs say.

A 69-year-old man is facing a murder charge after allegedly shooting a 46-year-old in the chest at Millmerran about 10pm (AEST) on Thursday.

Police have told the Toowoomba Chronicle the men had argued earlier in the evening at another nearby property.

Both then ended up at a home on Ayers Rock Road where they argued again and the younger man was shot once in the chest. He died at the scene.

South-West District Detective Inspector Paul Hart said the accused was found sitting in a car when police arrived.

Forensic officers are examining the scene, as officers work to notify the dead man's next of kin.

Police have said the men knew each other, but have not revealed the nature of their relationship.
