Alleged identity thief faces Qld court

An Iraqi national accused of netting $67,000 from banks as part of a Middle Eastern identity theft syndicate has appeared in a Brisbane court.

Mahmut Baity is facing one count of fraud over his alleged involvement with the ring, which has reaped more than $1 million from financial institutions in the past six months.

He did not apply for bail in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

Addressing Magistrate Noel Nunan from the dock, the 47-year-old said he did not have a lawyer but intended to get one "later on".

It's alleged he dishonestly obtained $67,000 from the National Australia Bank and other financial institutions between December last year and March this year.

He's also charged with possessing tainted property and beaching a bail condition.

After his arrest last Friday, police had stressed high-quality, forged identifications were extremely valuable to organised crime gangs.

They confirmed Baity's arrest was related to a continuing investigation that has so far led to four arrests and uncovered $300,000 in cash in a car.

His matter will return to court on April 29.
