Alleged cocaine plotter gets bail in Qld

A Sydney man charged over a plot to import 300kg of South American cocaine has been granted bail.

Jeffrey John Sagar, 63, was charged in May with conspiring to import a commercial quantity of cocaine after police foiled a plot to import $105 million worth of the drug from Peru via Papua New Guinea.

Police allege Sagar and co-accused Paul Smith, who was slapped with the same charge, were key organisers of the criminal syndicate behind the planned importation.

Dulcie Wagambio and Charles Wagambio, who have familial links to PNG, were also arrested over the plot and charged with dealing in the proceeds of crime.

Australian Federal Police believe the plot involved importing the drugs via Singapore and PNG then using a small boat to get it over the Torres Strait and into Queensland.

Sagar, from the inner-Sydney suburb of Rozelle, was granted bail in the Queensland Supreme Court on Wednesday.
