Alleged shooter faces court over killing

An alleged killer who handed himself in to police with a loaded shotgun down his pants in a bizarre surrender has faced court over the death of a Queensland father of three.

Clayton David Backman, 25, went to Brisbane City Watchhouse on Thursday night and told police over the intercom he'd been involved in the fatal shooting of Les Brooks at Tingalpa that afternoon.

He also revealed he had a loaded, sawn-off shotgun down the front of his pants, leaving police to deal with a potentially life-threatening situation.

Two officers rushed outside and drew their guns on Backman, who put his weapon on the ground and was taken into custody without incident.

He appeared in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Friday charged with the murder of Mr Brooks, 32, and unlawful possession of a weapon.

Dressed in denim shorts that revealed a large swastika tattoo on his right knee, Backman waved from the dock to his mother Samantha Bachman and said "I love you".

He was remanded in custody and ordered to appear in the same court via video link on December 19.

Mr Brooks, also known as Bomsy, died in hospital after he was shot in the stomach.

His older sister, Lisa Torrens, told AAP Mr Brooks was a "deadset legend" who would be remembered as a great father to his three children, the youngest of whom is only two-years-old.

"He would do anything for anyone. He'd give the shirt off his back," Ms Torrens said.

Ms Torrens said the family was hoping to raise funds for her brother's funeral.
