Accused Qld paramedic basher granted bail

A man accused of bashing a Gold Coast paramedic in the back of an ambulance has been granted bail.

Matthew Thielemans-Stirling, 25, allegedly attacked paramedic Brad Johnson at Upper Coomera on Friday night, leaving him with serious facial injuries.

Thielemans-Stirling appeared in Southport Magistrates Court on Monday charged with serious assault of a public officer and common assault.

He was granted bail, reportedly to attend his mother's funeral, and his case was adjourned to January 21.

Mr Johnson was one day away from going on Christmas holiday when he was assaulted, Queensland Ambulance Service assistant commissioner John Hammond said.

"It was his last day before he started annual leave ... so he gets to spend that time with his family," he said.

"He's surprisingly in very good spirits. Obviously a bit sore and sorry, but all things considered he's going quite well."

Mr Hammond said the incident highlighted an increased risk faced by all emergency services staff.

"It's nurses, it's police, everybody's in the firing line and we all need to work collaboratively to come up with some solutions," he said.

The United Voice union has called for the Queensland government to set up a taskforce to stop paramedics being attacked on the job.
