Accused New Zealand child sex offender to remain in custody

An accused New Zealand child sex offender will remain in custody, charged with nine counts of indecent treatment of a child under the age of 12.

Craig Edward Broadley, 42, who was allegedly involved in a worldwide pedophile ring that abused the adopted son of a gay Cairns couple, did not apply for bail during a brief appearance at Brisbane Magistrates Court this morning.

Police said they identified Mr Broadley during examinations of the chat logs, images and videos on electronic devices seized from couple Peter Truong and Mark Newton.

Truong and Newtown were jailed for 30 and 40 years, respectively, in the United States in 2013 after they admitted to buying the boy as a newborn from Russia and abusing him.

They recorded the assaults on high-definition video cameras and shared the footage with a worldwide pedophile ring.

He was then passed around through the network to be abused by other men.

Police alleged the electronic material showed the 42-year-old New Zealander had sexually abused the child and taken hundreds of photos.

Mr Broadley was extradited to Australia yesterday following his arrest in August 2016.

He is due to return to court on April 10.
