Accused denies involvement in Qld murder

A man accused of the execution-style murder of a Brisbane rugby league referee told an undercover police officer he did nothing wrong and was unsure why he was a suspect.

Covert video recordings aired in the Brisbane Supreme Court on Monday showed Tyson John Taylor denying all involvement in the shooting death of Tony McGrath in May 2013.

Taylor believed he was speaking to the head of an organised crime syndicate, set up by undercover police to specifically target the accused.

The 41-year-old was recorded saying he had nothing to do with the murder of Mr McGrath, a man he allegedly met once while helping a prostitute the Crown alleged he was in love with.

Susan Stewart was Mr McGrath's supposed fiancee.

Recordings showed the undercover officer telling Taylor he had sources who put him "100 per cent in the frame" for the murder.

"It seems to me you're the one the cops want," he said during a meeting at the Stamford Plaza in Brisbane in February 2014.

The so-called crime boss told Taylor he was hesitant to promote him through the ranks of the faux criminal organisation if police were going to be "all over" him.

Earlier on Monday, another undercover officer told the court Taylor had joined him on fake jobs which included the exchange of fake diamonds, handguns and fake passports for cash.

The court heard Taylor was "desperate for money" as he was sleeping in his car and wanted enough funds to hire a QC to gain access to his daughter.

The officer confirmed Taylor said a lot of the money he earned would also go towards paying the bills of a girl he was seeing, allegedly Ms Stewart.

The Crown alleged in its opening last week that additional recordings would show Taylor later confessed to the undercover officer that he shot Mr McGrath in the head at his Woolloongabba garage.

The trial continues.
