Qld submits final EIS on Abbot Point

The federal government has 40 business days to decide whether to allow the expansion of a Great Barrier Reef port servicing what will be Australia's largest coal mine.

Queensland State Development Minister Anthony Lynham says his department submitted the final environmental impact statement for the Abbot Point port expansion, which will service the coal-rich Galilee Basin and the proposed Carmichael coal mine, to the Commonwealth for approval on Monday.

"The Palaszczuk government is getting on with the job of creating an environment where business and industry can flourish," he told parliament.

The development has angered the Greens, who say it's evidence of the Palaszczuk government's plan to turn the reef into a "fossil fuel highway".

"What a tragic backflip from Labor after campaigning on protecting the Great Barrier Reef in the election," Greens senator Larissa Waters said.

"So many Queenslanders are deeply disappointed that the Palaszczuk Government has turned out to be just as bad as the Newman Government when it comes to treating our Reef as a highway for climate-destroying fossil fuels."
