Qld senator Mason to retire

Queensland Liberal-National Party senator Brett Mason is set to retire.

Senator Mason made his decision known to the coalition party room meeting in Canberra on Tuesday morning.

The move is expected to shore up Attorney-General George Brandis' preselection to a winnable spot on the LNP ticket in Queensland for the 2016 federal election.

Senator Mason lost his parliamentary secretary role in Prime Minister Tony Abbott's reshuffle just before Christmas.

He is expected to issue a statement later on Tuesday.

Senator Mason will resign before the budget session of parliament in May.

It had been a great honour to represent Queensland for more than 15 years, he said in a statement.

"I take this opportunity to thank my parliamentary colleagues and, in particular, the dedicated supporters of the Liberal National Party for the support they have given me throughout my political career," Senator Mason said.

"I will continue to support the Abbott government, which has delivered and will continue to deliver the best opportunity for a safe and prosperous future for all Australians."
