Qld's Toomey takes Crossfit world by storm

Australia's Tia-Clair Toomey might just be the second fittest women on the planet.

The Queenslander finished second at the World Crossfit Games in the women's individual competition in California at the weekend.

It was her first appearance at the event after only taking up the sport three years ago.

Toomey, who co-owns a gym in Gladstone, finished 50 points behind Icelandic winner Katrin Tanja Davidsdottir.

"She's by far one of the most mentally strong and driven people I know," fellow co-owner Sean O'Neill said.

"When you're training with her, she definitely lets you know that she wants to get one past you."

O'Neill said the pair kept in touch on Facebook, with friends and family watching her progress via an internet live stream.

"It's very surreal for a lot of us, everyone knew she'd do well but no one expected this."

Toomey voiced her excitement on Twitter on Monday, saying: "That was the best experience ever!!!".

Crossfit, a popular fitness regime, tests strength, speed and balance through a series of a high intensity drills.

The gruelling four-day competition was made up of 13 events, one being a 3.2 kilometre run with 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups and 300 air squats at the halfway point.

Toomey has also represented Australia in weightlifting and is aiming to compete at next year's Olympic games.

Fellow Queenslander Kara Webb finished fifth.
