Qld's oldest police station closing doors

Queensland's oldest police station is closing its doors after 130 years.

Police Commissioner Ian Stewart said the station at West End, in inner-city Brisbane, was originally built in 1884 with horse stables at the back.

"We believe that West End is the longest and oldest ... continuously serving police station in Queensland," he told reporters on Wednesday.

Police are in the process of moving to a new station 500 metres away, with the Police Minister Jack Dempsey admitting the historic building, in his childhood suburb, was no longer safe for officers.

"With older buildings comes a lot of safety issues," he said.

Queensland Police Union president Ian Leavers said the Boundary Street station, in former Labor premier Anna Bligh's old electorate, had been left to decay.

"This was the former premier's old seat where absolutely nothing was done and police were left to police in this hovel," he said.
