Qld public servants liability protection

Queensland public servants, including police officers and doctors, can no longer be sued for negligence or misconduct.

Those aggrieved by their actions will now have to sue the state under new laws passed by parliament on Wednesday night.

However, the government can recoup costs from the employee if they're found to have acted with gross negligence or engaged in conduct that was not in good faith.

Premier Campbell Newman, who introduced the bill, says the law provides greater certainty for public servants.

"It is about letting Queensland's public servants know - letting our police, our teachers, our doctors and nurses, our staff on the front desk of client service centres - that they will be supported in performing their roles," he told parliament.

"It does not take away the responsibility or accountability."
