Qld prison staff to take industrial action

Prison officers at a Queensland jail have voted to take industrial action over a wage dispute.

Staff at the Arthur Gorrie Correctional Centre, southwest of Brisbane, have agreed to stop work for between one and 12 hours at a time.

They've also backed an overtime ban and will refuse to wear approved uniforms.

Workers will meet on Monday night to decide when to begin their campaign but it's likely to take effect from early next week.

United Voice Queensland secretary Gary Bullock said negotiations with the prison's operator, the GEO Group, had failed despite 20 meetings spanning eight months.

The union said GEO had refused to offer a pay increase, meaning Arthur Gorrie officers were the only prison workers in the state not to receive one.

Other privately and publicly run jails in Queensland all struck deals this year, and workers at GEO's interstate jails also secured a 3.6 per cent rise this year, the union said.

"Our members can't understand why the same company is paying workers performing the same job at a different prison more money. It's crazy," Mr Bullock said.

Arthur Gorrie houses about 900 male prisoners.
