Items found in Qld excavation for babies

Foreign items but no bones have been seized from a rural Queensland property in the search for the bodies of babies believed buried there more than a decade ago.

Police are focusing on one family who used to live on the bush-covered land near Gin Gin, southwest of Bundaberg.

A bobcat was deployed on Tuesday as about 20 police and forensic experts resumed excavating the rental property for the second day.

Detective Inspector Mick Dowie, of the Cold Case Homicide Unit, has said police were yet to uncover skeletal remains, with the search to continue for another two days.

"We've just found items within the soil that are foreign to the soil and so until we take them away and examine them, we won't really know what they are or what they mean," he told reporters.

"I can confirm the excavation has not located any skeletal remains or bones of anything of that nature."

The large block at Goodnight Scrub is several kilometres from Gin Gin, a small town on the Bruce Highway which is home to about 1200 people.

A member of the public told police several months ago that the births were concealed on the property during the late 1990s and the early 2000s.

"The investigation centres around the concealment of a number of child births. Until we know what we've got ... we don't have what we'd declare a homicide investigation," Det Insp Dowie said.
