Qld MP quits ethics committee role

The head of Queensland parliament's select ethics committee is standing down from the role.

Government MP David Gibson announced the decision after a political rival published allegations about his past.

Mr Gibson has been under pressure to quit his ethics role, after political rival Scott Elms published allegations about the Gympie MP's past.

Despite earlier saying he would not stand down, Mr Gibson reversed that decision on Wednesday afternoon.

Mr Gibson said he was concerned that media interest in matters related to him could see the committee's work called into question.

It's the second controversy Mr Gibson has endured since the Newman government came to power in 2012.

He was forced to resign as police minister, after just a few weeks, when it emerged he'd failed to pay speeding fines and had driven without a licence.
