A man shot outside his Brisbane home is refusing to help police with their investigations.

The 41-year-old man was discovered with a single gunshot wound to his lower back after police were called to the car park of a unit block in Brisbane's northern suburbs.

He is in a stable condition in hospital, but is apparently not co-operating with police.

"It is quite a process to establish exactly what has occurred," Detective Inspector David Jackman told reporters.

"However, he has indicated he does not know who the person is."

Detective Jackman said witness reports were being used to help paint a picture of how the man wound up shot.

Several neighbours have reported hearing banging and yelling about 10.30pm yesterday, about a half an hour before the man arrived home when the shooting occurred.

Police say numerous shots were fired but they're confident the attack was an isolated incident and there's no ongoing threat to the public.
