Qld man 'hacked $110,000 in Bitcoins'

A Queensland man has been accused of hacking into a US-based online gaming company's computer network and stealing more than $100,000 worth of the digital currency Bitcoin.

The 21-year-old from Kingaroy, in southeast Queensland, had already been charged with hacking and fraud offences on March 19 after being caught illegally using the network.

But it wasn't until specialist cybercrime and fraud detectives found the man in Hervey Bay on Wednesday they realised the extent of the hacking.

He was in possession of about $110,000 worth of Bitcoin - allegedly obtained from the hacking - which will be considered proceeds of crime.

Bitcoin is a digital currency used to perform transactions online that is not tied to a central bank.

The man was charged with tainted property and breach of bail offences and will appear in Hervey Bay Magistrates Court on July 24.
