Queensland digger robbed of gold and silver

Thieves have stolen about $200,000 of gold and silver bullion from a digger who served in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Corporal Christopher Lunt returned from New Year's Eve celebrations to find his Brisbane home in Upper Kedron ransacked, his safe prised open and his uninsured bullion, mostly silver, and coins he was saving to buy a home, gone.

Corporal Lunt told the Courier Mail newspaper he believes it was a professional hit by a group of thieves.

"That's really been my life savings. That's the last 10 years in the military. I've just been putting away and saving that," he told the paper.

Corporal Lunt and his partner left their Upper Kedron home about 6pm (AEST) on New Year's Eve and returned at 3am (AEST) to find a side door had been torn off its hinges and the safe broken.

They were also struck by a strong smell of bleach.

The house's wheelie bin was found 200 metres down the road, next to a small amount of the bullion left behind on the road.

It's believed the thieves used the wheelie bin to haul away his precious metals and bleached the house to cover their tracks.
